Project: Leeds-Liverpool Canal Bicentenary
2016 sees the 200 year anniversary of the opening of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. The Sefton East parishes of Maghull, Lydiate, Melling and Aintree Village have joined forces to organise a series of events and projects to celebrate this historic anniversary. The parishes in conjunction with Sefton MBC, local schools, the Mersey Motor Boat Club and other interested groups are planning to put on events in June for local residents. There will be a launch event on 5th June at the Mersey Motor Boat Club in Lydiate which will have displays telling the story of the Canal as well as art work from local schools and groups.
There will also be a Canal Fun Day taking place on Old Hall Playing Fields in Maghull on 19th June. There will be lots to do and see including the climbing wall and live music. The highlight of the event will be a flotilla which will sail up the Canal from Melling to Lydiate stopping at the event to say hello! The flotilla will be led by the Pride of Sefton. There will be dragon boats and lots of opportunities to get involved.
Finishing off the celebrations will be a fun run taking place on 26th June. The route is currently being planned to take in the Canal and the views all around. Further details will be published once they’re firmed up so watch this space!
